Our congregation is blessed to have a beautiful building to worship in, fellowship with our friends and serve our community. The historic stained glass windows contribute significantly the beauty of our facility. Though the windows look beautiful and intact from a distance, close inspection reveals many glass pieces are cracked, support braces are broken, and windows are beginning to bulge. If we do not address these issues soon, the window will likely degrade to a point where they can no longer be repaired.
The Trustees of GUMC investigated repairing and replacing the windows. The cost was found to be about $90,000 in either case. After much discussion and deliberation the Trustees decided, in consultation with the leadership and finance teams, to proceed with preserving our beautiful and historic stained glass windows. We have contracted Willet-Hauser Architectural Glass of Winona, MN to do the work. This company is one of the oldest in the country, it is nationally recognized and has done restoration and repairing of stained glass windows nationwide since 1898. This is a big commitment for our church and the financial responsibility falls primarily on our congregation. We have initiated a capital campaign to raise the funds needed to cover the cost of the project. We ask each member prayerfully to consider an additional generous donation to the church and designate it to the Stained Glass Window Project. This website describes various ways you can help save our stained glass windows. |
